Dollar Store Owner Shot In Front Of Germantown Business

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The owner of "Pop's Dollar Plus Store" in Germantown is in critical condition following a shooting there.

Philadelphia police say the 46-year-old victim was sitting outside his store when a gunman approached and shot him several times. Nine bullet casings were found at the scene.

This happened just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday on the 4900 block of Germantown Avenue.

The gunman got away. He was described by the victim as a stocky man with a long beard driving a red minivan.

A friend who was on the phone with the store owner at the time of the shooting heard the gunshots and came running around the corner to his friend's aid.

"Based on ballistic evidence on the scene, this 46-year-old male was shot at point-blank range because we found nine spent cartridge casings from the 9-mm semi-automatic handgun in very close proximity to where the male was when he was shot," Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said. "This 46-year-old male was sitting in front of a dollar store that he is the owner of. The store was still open for business at the time he was shot."

The store owner is reported to be in intensive care at Albert Einstein Medical Center after bullets hit a major artery in his leg and part of his stomach had to be removed.

Nothing was believed to be taken from the store during the shooting, police said.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley has more details in this live report from the scene Thursday morning.
