Rally Held Against Pa. Voter ID Law, Supreme Court Considers Fate

PHILADELPHIA -

In a Thursday rally, protesters argued against Pennsylvania's new voter id law as the state Supreme Court begins to debate the law and its constitutionality.

Pennsylvania's Supreme Court justices are weighing the fate of a new state law that requires each voter to show valid photo identification.

The justices heard arguments Thursday on whether the law poses an unnecessary threat to the right to vote.

They aggressively questioned whether the law is necessary right now and whether it still guarantees the right to vote. With the Nov. 6 presidential election looming, there's no word on when they'll decide.

The 6-month-old law was championed by Republicans over the objections of Democrats and is part of the heated election-year political rhetoric in the presidential swing state.

Six justices heard the case: three Democrats and three Republicans. A 3-3 deadlock allows the law to stand.

A lower court refused to halt it from taking effect.

Without an injunction from the high court, as many as 758,000 registered voters may be excluded from casting their ballot in the November elections.
