PHILADELPHIA -

Olympic gold-medalist and boxing legend Muhammad Ali returns to Philadelphia Thursday night to accept the 2012 Liberty Medal, awarded by the National Constitution Center.

Ali follows in the foot steps of past winners Robert Gates, Tony Blair and Steven Spielberg.

The National Constitution Center says the boxing champ "embodies everything the award was established to honor: individuals of courage and conviction who strive to secure the blessings of liberty to people around the globe."

"Muhammad Ali symbolizes all that makes America great, while pushing us as a people and as a nation to be better," National Constitution Center President and CEO David Eisner said in previous statement.

Ceremony organizers say Ali's return visit to the area comes after a June 14, 2003, special Flag Day ceremony, where just before the center's official opening, he was the first to raise the American flag that hangs in the Grand Hall Overlook and had previously flown over every state and territory capitol.
