FENTON, Mich. (MyFox Detroit) -

The wife of a slain Oak Park police officer was on hand Friday to show support to the family of Patrick O'Rourke, a West Bloomfield Twp. officer who was fatally shot Sunday night.

Sarah Samborksi says she was overwhelmed by the support she received at her husband Mason's funeral back in 2008. Officer Samborski was killed following a 2008 traffic stop when then 16-year-old Jonathon Belton stole his gun and shot him in the head during a struggle.

"It meant everything to see everyone," said Samborski.

Sarah, now a member of the group Michigan Concerns of Police Survivors (MI-C.O.P.S.) handed out blue ribbons to those attending Friday's memorial service.

She offered the following advice to the O'Rourke family: "Take it one day at a time. Do everything you can to keep Patrick alive and (know) he's with them all the time as I know my husband is for me and my daughter."

Belton is serving a mandatory life sentence.
