Helicopter Crashes In Mercer County

Posted: Updated:

One person is dead after a helicopter crashes in a central New Jersey cornfield.

It happened in West Windsor Township around noon Saturday. The chopper went down near Route 1 and Quakerbridge Road.  It crashed into a cornfield at a farm, then burst into flames. Police say one person inside was killed. The identity of the pilot is Michael Scarfia, 65, from Staten Island NY. He was retired from the New York Police Department.

Investigators, including the National Traffic Safety Bureau, will be looking into what happened in the crash. The NTSB said earlier this evening that the final report on the cause of the crash will take between six to twelve months.

Among the items to be investigated are the background of the pilot, the aircraft itself, and the environment and conditions at the time of the crash. There were also reports to Fox29 of something falling from the aircraft, which has not been confirmed by authorities as if this may have been a factor in the crash. However, NTSB said this evening that one of the three blades from the chopper is missing. If seen, you are asked to call police.

Authorities say that the there was no distress call from the helicopter, which was traveling from Princeton to Atlantic City. They are also not speculating as to what happened at this time as more investigation needs to take place before a preliminary report. It is confirmed that there was a strong smell of fuel from the scene of the crash.
