Riptides Keep Lifeguards Busy Down the Shore

Posted: Updated:

Just because the summer shore season is over doesn't mean the danger is gone.

There were at least 11 water rescues on South Jersey beaches on Sunday. At least 2 swimmers were taken to Cape Regional Medical Center after being rescued by lifeguards in North Wildwood and Cape May.

Fox 29 spoke with one rescue victim moments after he was pulled from the water.

"It's scary you know what I mean. You get further and further out and you can see you are not getting back in" said the man only identified as Jason from Los Angeles, CA.

"I was just about over head and I brought my feet down and I could feel the sand and could feel myself getting pulled straight out" he said.

Jason was body surfing with his brother when he was caught in a nasty rip current off less than 100 yards from the beach near 10th Avenue in North Wildwood. He was rescued by lifeguard Pete Lees.

"You can feel it pulling real hard luckily he knew what he was doing and waited for us to get there" said Lees.

Also in North Wildwood just an hour earlier, 3 children were rescued just 10 blocks away. One of them a young boy was sent to the hospital after swallowing too much water. All 4 victims were rescued on what happens to be the last day lifeguards are on duty.

According to news alerts all 11 victims in 8 separate water rescues in Ocean and Cape Cay counties on Sunday were all blamed on the late summer rip currents.

"The rip currents are so bad people standing in waist deep water giant waves pick them up and take them right out" said North Wildwood Beach Patrol Chief Tony Cavalier.

Officials say although the water is still warm enough to go swimming but say you may want to stay out of the water since lifeguard coverage on the beaches will be scarce until next summer.
