Emotions Boil Over In Death Of 6-Month-Old Baby

MAYS LANDING, N.J. -

Nineteen-year-old Daquan Davis said little as he appeared in court to face charges in the death of little six-month-old Yusuf Stewart in Atlantic City.

The child's mother sat right behind the defendant with relatives as the prosecutor read the charges against Davis.

"The defendant's been charged with aggravated manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child," said Chief Asst. Prosecutor Pamela D'Arcy.

Davis was arrested after police say the child died while he was babysitting. The little boy's mother, Ebony Stewart, was at work at the time. She returned home to find the child unresponsive. She called police. The judge said the cause of death was "Specifically by shaking the child multiple times."

Police say Davis had been living with the baby's mother for about a month at the School House Apartment's on Martin Luther King Boulevard in Atlantic City.

He is not the child's father. Davis could be in jail until he is tried on the charges.

"Full cash bail, $750,000," the judge ordered.

After the hearing, tempers flared outside the court house in Mays Landing as Davis' family left.

They would not comment on the charges.

Emotions boiled over when the child's mother exited with her friends and family. She would not speak with reporters.

"Go about your business, goodbye, goodbye sir,"  a family member shouted at reporters.

But it didn't end there as both sides exchanged words and sheriff's officers came out to settle things down.

Ebony Stewart had one comment for the Davis family as they headed to the parking lot.

"Tell them why," she shouted as they headed to the parking lot.

Davis says he will be hiring his own attorney. This case will now go to a county grand jury where Davis will almost certainly face indictment on the charges.
