Philly Urban Farming Pioneer To Be Honored

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A Philadelphia farmer, considered a pioneer in urban farming, is being honored with the PoWeR Award for her work and dedication to her profession and her community.

Mary Seton Corboy is the co-founder and Chief Farm Hand of Greensgrow Farms in Philadelphia.

Corboy operates her farm in the heart of Kensington, but you'd never know you were in the heart of the city.

She says she started the farm 15-years ago when she couldn't find a decent tomato. But she says she also wanted to start the farm so that people in the city, and especially in the poor neighborhoods, could still get fresh produce.

Her idea has grown and her farm has since teamed up with 75 other farms to form a co-op that delivers foods to stands in neighborhoods without grocery stores.

Corboy is now considered a pioneer in urban farming, and her work hasn't gone unnoticed.

Corboy will be recognized for her work Thursday by the local nonprofit PWR.
