FOX Chicago Sunday Reporter's Notebook: Jackson Jr. needs to talk

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

It's past time for Rep Jesse Jackson Jr. to answer a few basic questions.

Foremost: Does he really plan to return to work on Capitol Hill? Or, as many now believe, are members of his high-powered family conniving behind the scenes with other power brokers to hand his congressional seat to someone else?

His home near Washington's DuPont Circle was quietly put up for sale earlier this month, the day after Jackson was released from Minnesota's Mayo Clinic, where his office said Jackson was treated for a bi-polar psychiatric disorder.

But when a DC blogger revealed the real estate listing last week, the Jackson home was suddenly taken off the market.

Strangely enough, though, when I called the former listing agent, I was told that, even though it's no longer formally for sale, a private showing could nonetheless be arranged for me. In other words, more Jackson double-talk.

They waited for weeks before telling us he'd taken a unilateral leave of absence from Congress, then wouldn't say where he was or what he was being treated for.

A final piece of advice to the Jackson family: Do not try to emulate the fast one pulled by Bill Lipinski when he handed off his congressional seat to his son, Dan. They got away with it, but Dan appears to have no ambitions for higher office.

Better to look at how similar shenanigans worked out for Todd Stroger as Cook County Board President. The backroom deal done by his family and friends that let Stroger bypass a Democratic primary ultimately wrecked his political career.

Food for thought, for every ambitious member of the Jackson family.
