Special Needs Student Receives New Bike

Posted: Updated:

A 10 year old special needs student in from Moorestown, NJ has a couple of unlikely friends to thank for a big gift.
It may not seem like a big deal but a brand new custom made 3 wheel bike means the world for Anthony Ambrose who suffers from cerebral palsy.

"It's just awesome" said the beaming 10 year old.

The bike is a sign of independence he's never had before.  His 2 wheeled bike was difficult for Anthony to ride because of balance problems.

"He wants a bike that looks cool that he could ride" said Anthony's mother Sue Ambrose.

Anthony got that bike and had an unlikely pair to thank.
Barry Buchowski and Chris Oakley, seniors at St. Augustine High School.

"Knowing when I was a kid, I used to love riding my bike. And when he didn't have that opportunity, I felt like I got to do something for him" said Buchowski.

Buchowski first honored Anthony during a January trip to Arizona for a high school home run derby. Barry belted a 412 foot home run and gave the ball to Anthony.
Months later when Chris and Barry were looking for a community service project for school, it was their idea to raise the $2,000 through bake sales to buy a new bike for Anthony.

"The smile on his face as soon as he took his helmet off the smile on his face was cheek to cheek" said Oakley.

Little did the high schoolers know--a new bike opened up new doors for Anthony.
He is now able to ride to school himself and do something he was never able to do before, participate in gym class.   And not just participate. Now he's leading the pack in his bike.

"That was like the best. Cause I was like the first. Usually I'm one of the last people" said Anthony.

"It's nice for all kids to participate and it's nice when they are on a team and do the other things the other children do" said his mother.

And that's all Anthony ever wanted, to be normal. Now his family is hoping other people will take inspiration from her son's story. His mother wants other schools to look into bikes for other special needs kids.

"There's a lot of other kids out there like Barry and Chris that think about someone in their community even on their own block they can help in some way"
