Website Suggests Philly Could Be Most Racist City In U.S.

Posted: Updated:

"I don't know about in America, but we definitely have our issues that's for sure," said Derrick Cooper of East Falls. Another man walking through Center City said, "I haven't seen any instances personally."

People are scratching their heads for sure over whether the city of brotherly love is anything but that, when it comes to race.

Shanell Jones said, "Overall I don't think so."

The website Gawker.com posed the question, could Philadelphia be the most racist city in America?

"I've been in a lot of different areas of Philly and I just don't find it too much," said Jones. Jared Piper of South Philly had a somewhat different opinion, "You have the different sections of Philly and it's not really like mixed communities so possibly yeah." But disagreed that it's the most racist in all of America.

The article cites examples such as Mayor Frank Rizzo saying he's practically a saint in south Philadelphia, the race riots of 1842 in Philly, the MOVE bombing and police brutality.

Demarr Reeder of north Philadelphia said, "I know police that's doing their job so I don't think they're picking on certain races."

Charles Gallagher of LaSalle University has spent the past 25 years as a race scholar, examining race issues in the United States. But he's not a fan of this particular conversation.

"Honestly I think it's nonsense in the sense that it's not done as a real survey and it's not a piece of social science literature." He thinks a healthy conversation would've included, "Why are schools still so segregated, why do people live in segregated neighborhoods, and why is it people continue to marry their own people?" asked Gallagher who also said, "I can tell you most assuredly Philadelphia is no more or less racist than Chicago or Miami or Los Angeles."
