A former Boy Scout leader has been arrested and charged with possession of child pornography. Now, investigators want to know if he has any possible victims out there.
Garrett Conover volunteered with Boy Scout Troop 284 in Radnor from 1999 to 2008.
Authorities arrested Conover 12 days ago as he entered the U.S. from Canada. They say he had more than 50 images of child pornography on him at the time.
A search of Conover's home in Swedesboro turned up a laptop with even more images, and links to Internet chat rooms.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that the 47-year-old Gloucester County resident apparently had a fetish for children's sneakers and wearing diapers himself, writing in an online chat, "Was outside in just a diaper. Out Front. I soooo wish my neighbors son sees me...he's like 14."
He also allegedly wrote that he used to hang out at the Kids Foot Locker and watch boys trying on tiny sneakers.
The Conover case is part of a wider one originating in Boston that has led to 45 people being arrested. More than 150 children have been identified as victims, so far.
Investigators say Conover allegedly made statements in an online chat room that he was involved as a Boy Scout leader in the Wayne area between 1990 and 2000. That led Radnor police to post his picture on the police website and begin gathering information about Conover's possible activities on the Main Line during those years.
The Boy Scouts issued a statement Monday night that reads in
part, "Garrett Conover was a scout master of Radnor Troop 284 from 1999
to 2001. He was registered as assistant scout master with Troop 284 from
2002 to 2008 but was inactive. There were no complaints filed against
Conover with the council or the national scouting organization."
Police want to know if there are any possible victims out there.
"We're just concerned that there are victims out there," said Lt. Andrew Block, of the Radnor Township Police Dept. "Obviously they may be older now, but if they had been a victim of the allegations, we want to know who they are so that we can pass that along to ensue and help their investigation."
At this point, Conover faces 5 to 20 years in prison on the child pornography charges.
