The flash of red and blue lights was visible from SkyFox early Thursday morning after a man crossing 8 Mile Road near Dequindre was hit by a car.
"Person crossing was wearing all dark clothing," said Detroit Police Officer Scott Sheets. "4:15 in the morning, it was still dark, and that's going to play a factor in the investigation."
The victim is 54-year-old David Gilam of Southfield. Police said he was not in the crosswalk.
Fox 2 video from the scene clearly shows the streetlights directly above the accident were not working.
Gilam was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but recent statistics show he could be one of the lucky ones. In 2011, Transportation For America ranked metro Detroit 12th amongst the country's most dangerous cities for pedestrians listing 799 fatal pedestrian accidents for the year.
Police are now combing through video from nearby surveillance cameras. The driver was questioned by police, but later released. Alcohol was not a factor for the driver, but police wouldn't say if charges will be filed.
