Food truck fight brewing in Royal Oak

The Royal Oak City Commission on Monday approved a bar's plan to invite food trucks into its parking lot despite the displeasures of some restaurant owners.

"We plan on having food trucks outside," said Ye Olde Saloon manager Donna Giles. "Just have an outdoor party and raise money for a good cause at the same time."

"If you say yes to one, you have to say yes to everybody so it's just going to be a big can of worms that we're going to open up," said Robin Silberi from O'Tooles Irish American Bar & Grill.

Food trucks, which are basically small eateries on wheels, aren't completely new Royal Oak. They've been a big draw during the city's monthly rally called Motor City Streets Eats. But restaurant and bar owners say it's time to draw the line before food trucks run all over them. "They're not here to stay," said Silberi. "They're here to say, 'OK, we're going to take your business, then we're going to go to where to business goes.'"

Ye Olde's food truck rally is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 13 and part of the profits will go to the Down Syndrome Guild of Southeast Michigan.
