College Newspaper Writer Admits To Making Up Paterno Quotes

Posted: Updated:
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -

An article published in September in a Penn State student newspaper used false quotes that were attributed to Sue Paterno, editors at the paper announced this week.

According to an article written by the Collegian's editor in chief and posted on The Daily Collegian website, editors became aware of issues regarding the "validity of quotes in the article previewing the dedication of the Suzanne Pohland Paterno Catholic Student Faith Center."

Editors say they have confirmed the staff writer who wrote the article never interviewed Paterno. On top of that, the staff member admitted parts of the quotes and other facts were taken from another website, StateCollege.com, without attribution, the paper stated.

According to the article, this wasn't the first time questions were raised about the writer's work, including issues about attribution.

"In light of the most recent incident, the Collegian is now in the process of reviewing the staff writer's past work for any additional issues in the validity of quotes used or errors in attributing information gathered from outside sources," the article said.

The Daily Collegian says the staff writer has been placed on suspension, pending completion of its review.

The Daily Collegian is published independently by students at Penn State.
