CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
The same Northwestern University group which has been working to free wrongly convicted prison inmates is now going to investigate shaken baby syndrome cases.
The Medill Innocence Program said it will start looking at the cases because of scientific advances which make it easier to determine the cause of death.
The unit will look at two cases involving care givers who are in prison for convictions in Will and DuPage counties.
The group will try to determine whether the babies involved may have had pre-existing conditions which contributed to their deaths.
This is the first time the project has looked into shaken-baby syndrome cases.
The project has also compiled a national data base and is reviewing about 1,400 other cases.
