Beverly Hills officer injured when chase ends in crash

Posted: Updated:

BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. -- Dennis Craig jumped out of his Beverly Hills bed to see a full sized Buick had run off on Evergreen north of 13 Mile Road and crashed right through his front yard.

"I get up, look out my window and I've got blinding lights facing me," said Craig.

Wednesday nights are Club Friday's at T.G.I. Friday's in Southfield.  An employee told us that a customer inside pulled two handguns.  Southfield Police were called.

"Southfield officers were conducting an investigation at the T.G.I. Friday's at which point in time the suspect they were investigating fled from them northbound on Evergreen Road.  They crossed over 13 Mile into the Village of Beverly Hills," said Beverly Hills Police Sergeant Howard Shock.

Southfield Police requested Beverly Hills Police lay out stop sticks.  The road block was setup at Beverly and Evergreen.  The suspect's Buick slammed into an Beverly Hills' officer's cruiser.

"Our officers were attempting to stop the car by deploying stop sticks.  The suspect lost control of his car, struck our officer's car.  Our officer was getting out of the car at the time.  His patrol car then struck him, throwing him approximately 30 feet," Shock said.

The suspect was clocked by police driving in excess of 100 miles per hour.  The crashed cars were finally stopped by a 75-year-old walnut tree.

"We were very fortunate the officer is alive," said Shock.

The officer has a broken leg, arm, hip and wrist, as well as many lacerations.

The suspect has a broken nose.  Police say he was driving drunk on a suspended license.  They also say he threw one of two guns he brandished out of the window of the car.  He may face assault on a police officer or assault with intent to murder charges.
