A traffic stop ended in gunfire Thursday night in Philadelphia's Nicetown section.
It all started around 11 p.m. when police attempted to pull over a car riddled with bullet holes and a broken windshield at Germantown Avenue and Pike Street.
"They observed a Mercury Grand Marquis that had its rear windows obviously shot out by gunfire," Chief Inspector Scott Small said.
Police say a passenger brandishing a handgun jumped out of the vehicle.
"The driver of the vehicle sped off with the vehicle," Small said. "The officers from the 39th District exited their police car and chased after the man with the gun. The male pointed the gun at the officers. The officers fired several shots, striking the suspect in the upper torso and legs."
That suspect is now hospitalized. The officers were not injured.
Moments later, the car was found abandoned but neatly parallel parked in the 3800 block of North 15th Street.
Police are still searching for the driver.
