PECO To Resume Smart Meter Installation ProgramMore>>
PECO says it will be restarting its smart meter installation program after an internal investigation and analysis by independent experts related to fires and incidents of overheating.
First, the utility will remove 96,000 Sensus meters that were previously installed, replacing them with Landis+Gyr meters over the next 45 days. Then, new smart meter installations will resume, PECO says.
A formal announcement from the company is expected later on Tuesday, according to FOX 29 Investigative Reporter Jeff Cole.
FOX 29 was the first to tell you about fires that started after the installation of PECO's new smart meters.
The utility stopped installing them almost two months ago.
PECO reported there were at least 29 incidents of overheating investigated and two fires that caused property damage.
The utility stated during its investigation that it had placed new safety features in its Sensus meters and brought in experts to help them get to the bottom of the issue.
But on Tuesday the utility said it will now swap out the Sensus meters for L+G models.
PECO says customers will get two letters and a phone call starting about six weeks prior to receiving a new meter. Any customer with questions or concerns should call 1-855-741-9011.
The work is part of PECO's effort to comply with Pennsylvania's Act 129, which requires major utilities to install new metering technology.
