Delco Girl Hosts Bake Sale for Uncle's Kidney Transplant

Drexel Hill -

You'd probably expect most 9-year-old girls to play with dolls and toys.  Not Makayla Ellis of Drexel Hill.

She has spent the last month working to save her uncle's life, organizing a bake sale to help cover the cost of his kidney transplant.

"He's like my best friend as an uncle," she said of John Fuscellaro, a member of the Delaware River Port Authority.

"I just felt like we should do something important."

She got many of her friends involved baking cookies, cupcakes, and many other goodies.  For a small donation, you could have a treat of your choice.

FOX29 caught her and the group in action at the corner of Bridge Street and Plumstead in Drexel Hill.

So far Ellis raised about $500 and has a goal of reaching $750 by Tuesday, the date of her uncle's transplant. It is her contribution to other fund raisers held by her parents.

"I find out she's here doing a bake sale just to support me and it's overwhelming," said her uncle of her work.

"She's a 9-year-old that has a big heart," said her mom Nancy Ellis.

Makayla Ellis and her team will continue to accept donations to help cover the cost of the procedure.
