ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

On Monday, friends and family of Naressa Turner, known to loved ones as Nunu, tried to pay tribute while struggling to understand why she was slain as they gathered to pray in the alley where she was gunned down.

Standing near a growing memorial, Nunu's mother made a public plea for peace.

"I just want to know, I want to tell everybody: Make this be the last death," said Odessa Turner. "Let's get together for our kids. Let's save them from these streets."

The 20-year-old's body was found inside an SUV in an alley Sunday afternoon. Investigators say they aren't sure what led to the shooting, but they don't believe it was random.

"We don't have any suspects in custody at this time and we are trying to figure out who, if anybody, was in the vehicle with her at the time," St. Paul police spokesman Howie Padilla said.

Family members say Turner was being threatened after someone on Facebook said she witnessed a murder. She denied witnessing anything, but she took the threats seriously. In fact, she moved to Atlanta three months ago. She came back to visit last week.

"I dropped her off at the truck at her sister's crib," says Nunu's best friend, Alica Sullivan. "I knew something was wrong because she always answers her phone. I'm still waiting for her to answer that phone."

Neighbors say they heard at least five gun shots.

"When the gun fire comes we kind of go back to our normal routine because it ain't nothing new around here," said neighbor Shelly Thompson.

St. Paul Police say they have been called the duplex Nunu was parked at 30 times in the past year.

"It's sad that people keep on losing their lives," said Janet Boelter about hearing the shots. "I guess police are doing what they can, but it would be nice to get it all out of the neighborhood -- to have a safe place for our children to play."

Turner leaves behind a 3-year-old daughter, and her family is trying to get a fund started for her.

"I just hope whoever did this is suffering like we [are]," said Sullivan.
