Congressman Pat Meehan (R-Pa.), a former aide, discusses the life and political career of former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter.
PENN VALLEY, Pa. -
Funeral services are being held Tuesday for the longest-serving U.S. Senator in Pennsylvania's history.
Flags across the area at half-staff to honor a man who did so much for the Keystone State.
Arlen Specter spent more than 40 years in public service, 30 of which were in the Senate. He also served eight years as the district attorney of Philadelphia.
"He was a man moved by two things, principal and passion – the idea that a public servant must overcome ideology," said St. Joseph's University Political Science Professor Randall Miller.
"He was very passionate about particular issues, but he was also very passionate about the idea that a public servant really must overcome ideology and work for the so-called common good, if you will. And that was his principle. And, thus, some of his votes don't make sense from a partisan point of view."
Specter passed away Sunday at his home in Philadelphia from complications of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He was 82-years-old.
Funeral services began at noon at Har Zion Temple in Penn Valley.
Following the service, Specter will be buried at Shalom Memorial park in Huntingdon Valley. That's located at Byberry and Pine roads.
