A fire sparked in the sixth floor of this West Philly high rise Tuesday afternoon. A five-year-old died and three others were rushed to the hospital.
PHILADELPHIA -
Firefighters say the child who died in a West Philly high rise fire was hiding from the smoke and flames under his bed.
The fire sparked in a Philadelphia Housing Authority building on the 400 block of N. Busti Street around 1:30 p.m Tuesday.
Emergency responders say four others were rushed to the hospital, including a second child and a firefighter.
Fox 29's Claudia Gomez reports a mother of three left her apartment to take out the trash, but when she returned, a neighbor was waiting outside the door to tell her he smelled smoke.
When she opened the door, firefighters say heavy smoke began to pour out of the apartment.
The woman and her neighbor ran inside. The pair managed to get the youngest son out, but neither could reach the five-year-old boy, who was hiding under a bed.
The third child was at school at the time of the fire.
Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers says the mom did all she could to rescue her kids.
The fire department struggled to get to the fire as Ayers says a nearby water main break at 42nd and Market, right by the fire station closest to the high rise, delayed the department's response.
Water from the break damaged the fire house, causing firefighters to have to move some of their trucks.
Ayers says it took firefighters more than six minutes to get to the fire.
