NEW YORK -

The FBI says a man was arrested Wednesday morning in lower Manhattan after attempting to detonate a 1,000-pound bomb, but the public was never at risk.

According to the FBI, Quazi Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, a 21-year-old Bangladeshi traveled to the U.S. in January to carry out a terrorist attack against the Federal Reserve Bank on Liberty Street, just blocks from the site of the 9/11 attack at the World Trade Center.

Nafis is expected to be charged with attempting to provide material support and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction, the FBI says in a news release.

According to the FBI's Field Office in New York, Nafis wanted to "destroy America" and believed the best way was to target the U.S. economy. He purchased bomb components and conducted surveillance for an attack in New York City.

Nafis also allegedly actively sought out al-Qaeda contacts within the U.S. to assist in carrying out an attack and referred to "beloved Sheikh Osama bin Laden" to justify killing of women and children.

The suspect assembled what he believed to be a 1,000-pound bomb inside a van Wednesday morning on his way to New York City before being arrested.

Nafis also recorded a video statement, in which he stated, "We will not stop until we attain victory or martyrdom," the FBI said.

The FBI says it controlled the entire operation to ensure the safety of the public and New Yorkers.
