DETROIT (AP) -- A $1.75 million Federal Emergency Management Authority grant is helping to pay for new protective gear for Detroit firefighters.
Detroit Fire Commissioner Don Austin says 645 sets of fire-resistant coats and pants are ready for distribution. Another 332 sets of gear are expected in about six weeks
The city of Detroit kicked in $965,000 to help pay for the gear.
The funding also paid for 100 automatic defibrillators that will be used to respond to heart attacks and other heart-related emergencies.
Mayor Dave Bing says in a release that it's imperative that city firefighters "are well-equipped to do their job."
The city also received more than $28 million from FEMA this year that prevented layoffs to 108 firefighters and allowed 26 laid off firefighters to be rehired.
