Undefeated Football Team Looking To Score Help For Title Game

Posted: Updated:

Touchdowns tend to come easy for the undefeated Levittown Lions.

But scoring money to caravan down to Florida for the United Youth Football League's National Championship hasn't been easy.

"We're having trouble getting fundraisers and stuff for it ,  but we'll get there," said Lions tight end Michael Burns.

The Lion's game plan is to raise $24,000 by December for the week-long trip.

That's a little more than a $1,000 for all 22-players.

Michael Stevens' cash strapped parents say the trip is a once in a lifetime opportunity that would have to be his only Christmas gift.

"My husbands out of work," explained Michael's mother Jackie. "I  don't have  a job and  everything I'm doing--  this is for his Christmas present."

When the coaches and parents of the  9 and 10-year-olds aren't on the sidelines cheering their sons on, they're hitting up Levittown businesses to support their boys' trip.

For three years and two championship games this team has been together.

"Make sure we play clean and no nonsense after the whistle," Coach Luke Miller yelled during

a huddle. His on-field lessons are making an impact off the field as well says quarterback Luke Miller. "He  says do our homework and get good grades and all of that." When asked if his grades are improving Miller said yes.

Corner Ryan Kelly says treating others fairly is another cornerstone of the coach's teaching.

"Show good sportsmanship to other teams even if you lose."

"Never slack, " said Logan Hook. "Don't dog it because if we do were just going to lose."

"These kids are really learning some good lessons thru sports and a great coach," said Vivian Wilcox as she listened near tears.

Wilcox and other parents are just hoping their Levittown community doesn't fumble the opportunity to help the Lions score a national title if they win one more game.
