City, Philly School District Reach Agreement To Preserve Winter Activities

An agreement between the City of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia School District will preserve winter season recreational programs and activities for more than 16,000 children, Mayor Michael Nutter announced Tuesday.
The agreement states that the school district will continue to pay for indoor facilities at some schools so that they can remain open on weeknights.
The city will pay for indoor facilities at other schools to remain open for an additional hour on week nights beginning November 5th and all day on Saturdays beginning in December.
The city says the cost for the 2012-2013 winter activities season, which spans five months, is expected to be $338,0000.
"This is a smart, collaborative approach to provide high-quality services to young Philadelphians using limited public resources," Mayor Nutter said in a statement.
According to the city, the agreement lowers the cost to the city by about half with changes in staff schedules to reduce overtime and costs and changes to after school schedules for organizations using the facilities.

Rain moved in Saturday afternoon and the chance for it will stick around through the seven day forecast.
It becomes very unsettled across our area with clounds and showers again Sunday. The best chance for rain is in the morning and afternoon thunderstorms are possible towards our south.
Sunday is cool but we do warm up well into the 80s by Tuesday. With the warm weather comes a better chance for thunderstorms.
