Sandy Forcing Casino Closures

The sound of sawing and drilling was heard in Atlantic City as hotels and restaurants  boarded up,  bracing for Sandy's arrival.

"The governor has ordered casinos closed," said Atlantic County Emergency Management Director Vice Jones.

All the casinos will shut down Sunday afternoon.

Their closings are part of a mandatory 4 p.m. evacuation that also includes the Atlantic County Barrier Islands.

"This is very serious," said Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson. This is the one that never happened before. I hope to God I am wrong."

 

"The people that live along the Barrier Islands,  we've got to get them away from the wall of water so to speak that's going to be coming on land as this storm approaches."

Sandy is also serious business in Gloucester County. It sits right on the Delaware River. That poses a major flooding threat to people who live in the  community. Like Calvin Fisler.

"We're always flooded around here that's why it's called Floodgate road, " explained Fisler.

Construction spent Saturday  making emergency repairs to shore up the Repaupo beers and levees before Sandy's arrival.

With record coastal and inland flooding they're  needed to help protect Calvin Fisler's home and the rest of Gloucester County.

"Worst case if we had a breach in these levees it could affect Glassboro. It could impact 295, the Turnpike then that takes down interstate commerce," explained Gloucester County Freeholder Director Bob Damminger.

 

Back in Atlantic County where a "State of Emergency" was issued early Saturday morning...billboards are coming down.

Tourists and residents are also enjoying their final hours on the boardwalk and Jersey Shore before what officials believe will be an historic Halloween horror.

"Make arrangements to get out and get out early," Levinson implored. "This is the one we've been fearing throughout the history of this area."
