County commissioner proposes gun violence plan

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

A Cook County commissioner has a new proposal to reduce gun violence without taxing firearm and ammunition purchases.

In a statement Saturday, Commissioner John Fritchey said his plan would create a gun court to expedite the prosecution of people charged with gun crimes.

It also would provide $1 million in grants to organizations aimed at preventing violence and getting youth involved in positive activities.

Earlier this month Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle proposed a new tax of $25 per firearm and a nickel for each bullet.

Preckwinkle said the tax would help quell gang violence and raise about $1 million. She acknowledged it would likely face a legal challenge.

Fritchey said he would pay for his plan by delaying filling 28 high-paying, vacant administrative positions.
