Many Stayed At Shore Despite Evacuation Orders

Posted: Updated:
VENTNOR CITY, N.J. -

The water is rising in Atlantic City and other nearby barrier islands. In some spots, it's waist deep, and high tide won't come again until later tonight.

Couches and mattresses were seen floating down streets, in some places Monday morning, and cars were even seen being swept up.

FOX 29's Chris O'Connell reported earlier Monday morning that Cape May County estimates that only 60 percent of residents stayed despite orders to evacuate the barrier islands.

On Monday morning, FOX 29's Steve Keeley was farther north, in Atlantic County, speaking with a Ventnor City family that opted not to leave, in part because of their experience last year during the evacuation for Hurricane Irene.

They have a generator, so they expect to lose power. Six children were playing inside the home, which has a fourth-story attic, if needed.

The family talked about their experience with Irene and what led them to stay put.
