Atlantic City Takes Brunt Of Superstorm Sandy

Posted: Updated:

Atlantic County officials say search and rescue teams are looking for residents who may be stranded in their homes after Sandy's destructive landfall.

Sandy made landfall near Atlantic City, N.J., around 8 p.m. Monday, creating mass flooding and obliterating part of its famed boardwalk.

Powerful winds and soaking rains grew more intense as Sandy screamed ashore.

Water came over and around the dunes and onto the streets of the Jersey Shore. Severe flooding cut off Atlantic City and the rest of the barrier islands from the mainland.

Huge sections of Atlantic City boardwalk from several blocks north of the Revel Casino have crashed through and into people's houses. The parking lot of Resorts Casino being completely underwater.

An emergency curfew was put in place from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.

As of 9 a.m., there were 82,575 AC Electric customers without power.

There is a boil advisory in effect for Atlantic County and Atlantic City because the water treatment plant experienced flooding. Residents should bring all water to a rolling boil before use no matter what the use, such as eating, brushing your teeth, etc. The county is working to obtain water for residents.

A countywide travel ban is still in effect until crews are able to determine the damage from the storm because of downed power lines and trees. Once it has been determined it's safe they will lift the ban. Access to barrier islands is prohibited because there is still a lot of standing water.

Anyone who needs shelter or assistance should call the emergency management office.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley is surveying the damage in Atlantic City this morning and filed several video reports.
