EWING, N.J. -
Gov. Chris Christie during a Tuesday evening storm briefing told reporters he never thought he'd ever see what he saw Tuesday while touring storm damage along the Jersey Shore.
"I never thought I would see what I saw today, ever," Christie said during the 7:15 p.m. storm briefing.
The New Jersey governor got his first look at the storm damage along some of New Jersey's hardest hit shore towns.
Christie's tour included stops in Long Beach Island, Atlantic City, Cape May, Sea Isle City and Avalon, among others.
The governor called it an "overwhelming afternoon."
"We'll rebuild it, no question in my mind we'll rebuild it, but for those of us who are my age, it won't be the same, it will be different because many of the iconic things that made it what it was are washed into the ocean."
According to Christie, 2.6 million New Jersey homes are without power. The governor also confirmed six deaths as a result of the storm.
Sandy made landfall around 8 p.m. Monday night, but its impacts were felt long before. A majority of Atlantic City roads were flooded as the storm approached and high waves and flooding could be seen in Cape May.
In a statement, Thomas R. Gilbert, District Commander of the Atlantic City Tourism District said the majority of the Boardwalk remained undamaged, but the portion washed out by the storm was an "area limited to the Boardwalk fronting the Absecon Inlet only."
In Sea Isle, a city spokeswoman said the city must repair its infrastructure before it can allow homeowners to enter the area.
"While we would like to allow Sea Isle City residents into town to start individual recovery efforts, the City must first repair its infrastructure, which includes police, fire, government and public works operations that will allow us to protect you, your family and your property," a statement issued by the city read.
As of Tuesday night, an emergency proclamation remained in effect for Sea Isle City.
