Voluntary evacuations and an offering of sandbags for residents to place around their homes wasn't taken lightly.
"That's a little scary," said homeowner Sue Grieshaver. "Especially since we're about 30 to maybe 50 feet away from the water."
FOX Chicago spoke to Sue Greishaver, but had to do so through her window. Most of her home, including her doors, are surrounded by sandbags.
"We basically sandbagged the doorways and the garage door and I can get out when I need to, but we're just leaving it up until we're sure the waves aren't going to be a problem," Greishaver said.
Just down the street, another homeowner decided to also stay put and sandbag where he felt most vulnerable.
"I wasn't too worried about it," said John Bealer. "I decided to do some sandbagging today in front of the garage just in case the water did get up here because the garage is kind of low."
Waves were expected to reach 17 feet or higher, but despite the high winds, officials say the waves topped out at roughly 12 feet.
"If we would have had 2 more feet of waves coming up, we would have probably had some property damage, water in the basements," Bealer continued. "So we're very happy that it didn't happen, but if it would have happened we would have been prepared."
