Mandatory Evacuation Order Lifted For 11 Barrier Island Communities

Posted: Updated:
TRENTON, N.J. -

The mandatory evacuations in several Barrier Island communities were lifted Thursday to allow residents to return home for the first time since Sandy tore through the area.

Gov. Chris Christie on Thursday announced he was granting a request by the Atlantic County government to lift the mandatory evacuation for some of the barrier island communities.

Christie's office says the evacuation order was lifted in Brigantine Beach, Margate City and Longford Borough.

The communities of Atlantic City and Ventnor City remain under the mandatory evacuation order at the request of each city's local officials, Christie's office said.

County officials say residents who want to return to Brigantine must enter via Rt. 30, the White Horse Pike. Residents will not be able to access the town from the Atlantic City Expressway.

The towns not under the mandatory evacuation order will continue to operate under a locally imposed 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew until further notice.

Later Thursday, Christie's office announced it had lifted the mandatory evacuation for Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, North Wildwood, West Wildwood, Avalon, Stone Harbor, Sea Isle City and Ocean City.
