Underground Transformer Explodes In Old City

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

An underground transformer exploded early Friday morning near our station at Fourth and Market streets in Old City.

The force of the blast around 2:30 a.m. was so strong that several of our producers actually felt the building shake.

The explosion blasted three manhole covers out of place.

People in the area still have power. The only problem was the traffic light is out here at Fourth and Market streets.

PECO was out there Friday morning, working to fix the problem, and Fourth Street was closed between Race Street and Market Street for several hours. But everything was back open shortly after 7 a.m.
