For Some, Front-loading Washing Machines Causing Problems

Posted: Updated:

Front-load washing machines are supposed to save you money and water, but many consumers complain that while they get the job done they cause a few problems.

Mother of three Connie Janus bought a front-loading washing machine a year and a half ago and thought it would be the perfect fit.

Now, she says her clean clothes often come out smelling like mildew.

Janus's washing machine was made by Bosch, but her attorney, Julie Miller, says the problem is occurring in all front-loading washers.

Miller says because of their high efficiency, the water level is low, so it doesn't ever get high enough to clean itself.

She says she now represents thousands of front-loading owners in a class action lawsuit against the Whirlpool Corporation.

Whirlpool says users can reduce the buildup and odors by leaving the washer's door open between uses, removing wet items promptly, using just the recommended amount of detergent and following a monthly maintenance cycle.

Whirlpool also told Fox that less than 1 percent of all owners of front-load washers have complained about the issue.

But Miller says manufacturers know it's a problem and haven't told consumers on the front end.
