Thieves Posing As Utility Workers Target 82-Year-Old NJ Woman

EVESHAM TWP, N.J. -

An 82-year-old Evesham woman says she was the target of two thieves posing as workers cleaning up from the storm.

The woman, who's identity we're holding to protect her, tells FOX 29's Claudia Gomez a man wearing a hard hat and a plaid shirt knocked on her Evesham door Tuesday afternoon.

The man told the woman he was working with crews outside.

The woman says a crew was working to repair a sewer line in front of the home, so she let him inside after he told her the water was contaminated and that he didn't want her to drink it.

The grandmother of 10 says she led the man to the bathroom at his request.

The woman says once inside the man closed the door.

What she didn't see was the man's accomplice, who took jewelry and hundreds of dollars of cash from her bedroom.

The woman says when she finally insisted on opening the bathroom door, the man left and was seen driving away in a white pickup.

If the man were a legitimate utility worker, he would have had identification on his vehicle and he would have been wearing a uniform and ID badges.

The woman says she never asked to see the man's ID.

She called police as the man was leaving her home, but the thieves got away.

She says she wants others to learn from her mistakes.
