Hockey League Changes Tune On National Anthem Ban

Posted: Updated:
WESTMORELAND COUNTY, PA. -

Here's an update on a story we first told you about Tuesday. It's all after a controversial call by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League commissioner to ban the national anthem before games.

Well, now he's changed his mind.

Last week, PIHL Commissioner Ed Sam sent out a letter to the league saying the anthem was banned before games.

But the decision received immense backlash and national attention, and Sam says he received more than 400 emails and phone calls about his decision.

"I made a mistake, you face up to it, you fix the problem, and you go forward," Sam said.

Sam also says the decision to originally ban the anthem was because of time restraints.

The commission covers 183 schools in central and western Pennsylvania and parts of West Virginia.
