Employees Pushing Back Against 'Black Thursday'

Posted: Updated:

A California Target employee is telling the company to keep the doors shut.

Casey Saint Claire is leading the charge to stop Target from opening at 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day so workers can stay home and spend time with their families.

She is the brains behind an online petition that has already brought in more than 200,000 supporters.

But not everyone is in favor of the idea.

"You've got 23 million people who are either out of work or underemployed. I don't think that this is the year to make this big to-do about it," business strategist Carol Roth told Fox Business.

With the economy struggling to get back on track, companies count on the holidays to boost sales. In 2011, the Black Friday weekend accounted for 11 percent of total holiday spending.

"The economy is certainly failing," Scott Page said. "Well, I think Americans should play their part, and if they want to go, they should be able to go to work that day so that they can spur the economy and people can go spend money. You can't do that if people don't show up for work at Target."

Target isn't the only one starting early. Toys R Us, Sears, Walmart and the Gap are just a few of the other retailers opening before you're done with Thanksgiving dessert.
