Phoenix police say they're seeking a man for questioning in an apparent home invasion robbery that left a man so badly injured he later died.

Police say 67-year-old David Cardoza was found severely injured inside a home in central Phoenix on Oct. 11 and died Nov. 9. His 96-year-old mother was also inside the home but was unharmed.

Police say they found evidence showing Cardoza was the victim of a home invasion robbery. Several personal items were missing when officers arrived.

Sgt. Steve Martos said Thursday that detectives have identified 35-year-old Angel Padilla as a person of interest in the case.

"Since then, linked some of the things that were located at this house to one particular individual, we are short of calling him a suspect," says Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos.

Justin Cardoza is the victim's son. He says David Cardoza was a blues singer and a teen counselor who was dedicated to helping others.

"To me he was pops, to my kids he was papa," says Justin. "He's done hospice for last seven years, driving all around taking care of people in their final moments."

Padilla is wanted for kidnapping, assault, and aggravated assault on a police officer in a separate case. He's been on the run since the middle of October.

On October 13, he allegedly kidnapped his ex-girlfriend and shot up a Phoenix Police car. He's been wanted ever since, and has also been tied to several home invasions.

Anyone who knows where Padilla is should call Phoenix police. Silent Witness is offering a $5,000 reward leading to Padilla's arrest.
