Avondale Police arrest 2 in copper thefts

AVONDALE, Ariz. -

Two people have been taken into custody in a series of copper thefts from valley home improvement stores.

25-year-old Calvin Clark and 23-year-old Leah Lienhart, of Goodyear, were booked into jail on theft, trafficking in stolen property, and organized retail theft charges.

Last month, Avondale Police officers became aware of two incidents during which large amounts of copper were shoplifted from the Avondale Home Depot.

Over the course of their investigation, police determined Clark and Lienhart had allegedly been shoplifting copper from Home Depots and Lowes stores across the valley -- to the tune of $4,500.

They then turned around and sold that copper for scrap at scrap metal yards across the valley, police say.

This apparently went on for several months and the suspects garnered several thousand dollars in proceeds.
