DETROIT (WJBK) -- The holiday season is all about giving. This year, families in metro Detroit need your help more than ever. Friday, the Salvation Army officially kicked off its Red Kettle Campaign. The goal is $8.5 million in donations.
"The poverty level here in Detroit is up to about 41 percent, and so that's a significant increase," said Capt. Terry Smith. "We see those eyes of people who are struggling in Detroit every day at The Salvation Army, and we want to have those resources to tell them... we can help you with your rent assistance or with a food box or maybe an opportunity of some school supplies."
He added that red kettle donations comprise 65 percent of the organization's annual budget.
Smith said there will be 450 kettles around metro Detroit, including at Flagstar Bank and Walmart locations.
"You can't go anywhere in the city without finding a red kettle."
