A 10 year old Broomall boy is recovering from serious
injuries he suffered after he was struck while riding his bike on a busy
Delaware County road.
The boy who has
not been identified was struck by a silver Buick near the intersection of
Sproul and Langford Roads in Broomall around 12:40 pm Sunday afternoon.
Witnesses say the driver of the Buick collided with the
boy who was not wearing a helmet. It is
not clear who is at fault. Classmates say the boy is a 5th grader at Russell
Elementary.
Police
dispatchers tell Fox 29 the boy was unconscious as he was airlifted to
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Family friends say the boy suffered
serious injuries but is stable.
Residents nearby
complain this section of Route 320 with a mix of residential and commercial
traffic is too dangerous for drivers and pedestrians who don't use designated
crosswalks.
"People who are driving don't want to be at risk and
having people slamming on their breaks because people are crossing where they
want to cross" said Frances Bell of Broomall.
Just 100 yards away from the latest crash is a roadside
memorial for a woman who was killed by a passing motorist while crossing Sproul
Road.
Bicyclist Ed Shihadeh from Broomall says he was nearly
hit by a car just a few months ago
"Drivers need to be more aware and they are
basically you basically get the attitude I'm in the car I got something that's
bigger than you. Get out of the way" said Shihadeh.
Some teenagers we spoke with also see the potential
danger and are not surprised there was another accident.
"It's pretty nasty road..you don't want to ride you
bike across there you might not want to even cross" said Pete McGinnis.
The driver of the
latest crash has not been charged.
Marple Township Police say they will have more on the crash on Monday
morning.
