Phoenix mayor honors crews returning from NY

Posted: Updated:

Nearly 100 employees from our local power companies were recognized Tuesday for their help in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Crews from SRP and APS headed to the northeast on November 2 and spent two weeks hard at work.

In their APS and SRP shirts -- it's obvious that these men are employees of our local power companies -- but to the residents of long island, they're heroes.

"So they were really happy to see us there, they're coming out and we were almost doing special requests… ‘Can you come over here, we have no power, can you come here?' We had an agenda but we were also trying to make as many people happy as possible," says Terry Barnes, SRP.

"People coming out of their houses when their lights came on, people crying, just very glad to see someone there willing to help out," says David Miller, APS.

David Miller of Litchfield Park was one of the employees recognized by city of Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton alongside the Arizona Air National Guard.

"We have a big big heart and that heart is represented here today by these outstanding employees of APS and SRP," says Mayor Greg Stanton.

The Air National Guard used 18 aircrafts to transport all the personnel and about 50 giant trucks.

"Coming out here this was something else, getting on these military aircraft was something we never expected to do in our lives. It was a lot of fun," says Miller.

Once they landed, they got straight to work repairing downed wires and broken poles as a nor'easter rolled through. The Arizona crews worked through the cold with crews from across the country.

"You saw all the other utility trucks, APS, all the tree trimmers… there were thousands of trucks so that was awesome to see, it was nice to be a part of a big, helping the cause you know," says Barnes.

They missed their families and the Arizona sun, but these men say they were happy to make a small sacrifice to help Sandy's victims.

"We were doing what we're asked to do, we're happy to do it and we'd go again in a second."

All of the Arizona teams and their equipment are back in our state.
