4 Paradise Valley schools on the chopping block

Posted: Updated:
PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. -

A meeting took place in Paradise Valley Monday night to talk about school closings.

It's a sad reality for so many school districts, but it's happening in several cities.

The reasons for the closures vary, but they include education funding cuts and shrinking enrollment numbers.

Parents say they like that due to the teacher to student ratio, but schools can't operated on a such a shoestring budget, but they don't want to interrupt their child's learning environment.

"I don't want to see it closing.  The school that they would probably put us at is not that far way, but it's on the other side of Bell [Road] and we're on the north side and that would be on the south side and it breaks up that community..makes it a little harder to stay the community we are," said Deneen Sulsona, who has a child that attends Foothills Elementary School.

Student enrollment:

  • 390 - Foothills Elementary
  • 332 - Village Vista
  • 405 - Desert Springs
  • 407 -  Sandpiper

Most of the elementary schools in Paradise Valley have over 600 students.

The governing board will decide on December 20 if the schools will close in May 2013.
