PHILADELPHIA -
Every year, we hear about people going to the emergency room on Thanksgiving for a variety of reasons.
On Good Day Thursday morning, Dr. Mike Cirigliano stopped by to talk about the most common reasons people end up in the emergency room on Thanksgiving.
Dr. Mike says he called a fellow doctor who works in an emergency room to see what his team often saw on the holiday.
Every case from a cut from a knife to a severe burn has made its way into an emergency room on Thanksgiving.
Below, we've listed Dr. Mike's top five reasons:
1. Sharp objects
With all of the prep work and cooking that takes place on Thanksgiving, many people find themselves in the kitchen using sharp knives.
2. Alcohol
In addition to drinking on Thanksgiving day and during the meal, Dr. Mike says many people drink the night before.
3. Overindulgence
We often joke about overeating on Thanksgiving, but Dr. Mike says you should always be cautious of what you're eating and how you're eating it. Things as simple as chewing your food can go a long way. Dr. Mike says overeating can lead to dangerous health problems and can increase the chances of a heart attack.
4. Burns
There are always plenty of pots and fans heating food during Thanksgiving and now more and more people are deep frying their turkeys.
5. Family members
Dr. Mike says there's a tremendous amount of domestic violence over the holidays as things get out of hand for some families.
