Glendale Glitters lights up downtown Glendale

Posted: Updated:

The lights are on at one of the valley's biggest holiday displays. We're talking about "Glendale Glitters."

The illuminating display of 1.5 million lights will shine down 16 blocks of historic downtown Glendale during the holiday season. It kicked off Friday night.

Thousands of people showed up Friday to see Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs turn on the lights for the last time. Next year, another mayor takes over.

Budget cuts almost turned off Glendale Glitters, but residents voted on a tax increase that would fund the event.

"This is a signature of our city, this is what brings people downtown, this is what keeps businesses downtown in business, this is so much a part of tourism and economic development and hometown values," said Scruggs. "This can't go, ever ever ever."

Scruggs has been in office since 1993 and was there when this event began 20 years ago.

"It was an idea we had, and the community embraced it, and it kept growing and growing. And then people outside of Glendale began coming in. I'm so proud of what we created here."

Glendale Glitters was named "best kid event" for 2012, and will feature snow, Santa, and carriage rides.

It's a free event, open nightly to the public from 5 p.m. to 10. This weekend alone, they're expecting 75,000 people.

Workers have been setting up for Glendale Glitters since August.
