Mother of premature baby recounts ordeal during superstorm

Emma Sophia was born days before superstorm Sandy hit the New York City region, knocking out power to NYU Langone Hospital where she was being cared for in the neo-natal unit.

The child's mother, Luz Martinez, recounted the ordeal of keeping Emma, only two-pounds at the time, safe.

"It was just agony as I tried to contact the nurses at the hospital. I panicked and tried to drive to the hospital but all the bridges were closed. My panic was that she was in an incubator that basically works with electricity. How were they going to keep oxygen on her with no electricity? She told me they were using batteries but they don't last long. Finally, they confirmed she was taken to Mt. Sinai, " Martinez told GDNY on Monday.

Several weeks later and Emma is getting stronger and healthier.

"She's fine and back on oxygen...waiting for God to do some more miracles.  Hopefully we can have her home before Christmas."

If you want to help baby Emma, her mother, Luz Martinez, is registered at Babies R Us (registry number 48795777) and also Target (registry number 014134400001116).
