DETROIT (myFOXDetroit.com) -

A court hearing is underway in the dog fighting case involving Toranio Hightower, a Detroit area rapper known as Young Calicoe.

He and two other defendants are charged in Wayne County with Conspiracy to Gamble, Conspiracy to Commit Animal Fighting and Animal Fighting between July 2009 and July 2012 at a home located on West Outer Drive in Detroit. If convicted, the 22-year-old rapper and his accomplices face up to 13 years behind bars.

On Tuesday an animal cruelty investigator with the Michigan Humane Society was on the stand.

The whole case against Young Calicoe began in July after a video went viral reportedly showing the rapper bragging about dog fighting. Police and animal cruelty investigators raided the home and seized dogs found in kennels along with several other animals including roosters and rabbits.

In July Calicoe denied the allegations to FOX 2 saying the whole thing has been blown out of proportion. He said he is a battle rapper and the video was all about image. He said the animals did not belong to him but rather to a friend of his who is an animal lover. He said the animals were not used for fighting in any way.

Today's preliminary hearing is expected to continue on Friday and will be used to determine if there is enough evidence to bring the case to trial.
