Ndamukong Suh receives ticket for driving without 'due care' in Lathrup Village

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- Fox 2 has learned Lathrup Village will move forward with Detroit Lions' star Ndamukong Suh's traffic ticket.

Meanwhile, Lions' head coach Jim Schwartz had a recommendation Tuesday for his players when they are off the field.

"Honestly, I think it would be best for every single player in the NFL to have a driver," he said.

On November 15, Suh was cited for failing to use due care and caution after a Lathrup Village police officer allegedly caught him passing cars at a high rate of speed and whipping into traffic right before his lane ended almost hitting a vehicle.

Before that in Dearborn, he was accused of sideswiping a car. In Portland, Oregon, he was ticketed for speeding, and in another incident there Suh lost control of his classic car and hit a tree. His injured passenger is now suing him for being reckless and negligent.

"I don't know if that's always feasible and things like that, but I think there are a lot of situations that can be avoided and things like that if you have a driver, and it just takes something else off your radar," Schwartz said. "He's certainly a guy that is in a very fortunate position that he could afford something like that."

Suh got a pretty simple traffic ticket in Lathrup Village that got pretty complicated after the police chief held it back for review. William Armstong looked at the dash cam video and felt it was an improper charge from an overzealous officer when it came to writing traffic tickets.

"Quite frankly, the way that the ticket was written, I don't necessarily agree with, but if the city attorney agrees, it would go forward as it's written," he told me on Monday.

He did agree. After looking at the dash cam video Tuesday, city attorney Phil Seymour felt the charge should not be reduced and run its normal course playing out in court with Suh treated like everyone else.

"We want all our players to be good citizens off the field, to be safe drivers, to pay parking tickets and all those things. I mean that just all part of being a member of society," said Schwartz.

The city attorney said Suh's charge could be reduced down the road, which happens a lot of times with tickets like this, but for him to be asked to review this case this early before it even got to court was unusual.
